These are what I consider to be essential, or at very least recommended, applications that can also be found on my Macs. If the applications are not longer available I will do my best to host the last stable version here for you.

Bean

Bean

In the word processing world on the Mac, Apple’s own Pages is a great alternative to MS Word but without all the features and clutter of the Microsoft behemoth. However, even further away from this is the rather well built Bean…and it’s free! Bean is clean unobtrustive approach to word processing that handles rtf, ftd, plain text, webarchive formats well – it also has it own .bean format. One thing to note however, is that bean is only partially compatible…

Disco

Disco

Yes, OS X (or MacOS) has in-built functionality for burning CDs or DVDs via the Finder or Disk Utility, but sometimes we all want a little more… In steps Disco, an incredibly polished app sadly discontinued in 2011 but still very useful today. The developers have even made the app free with the license name and serial number below. Disco has a brilliantly simple interface that hides all its power and features. No cluttered windows or difficult learning curve here….

CronniX

CronniX

CronniX is an Aqua front-end to the powerful Unix tool “cron”. Cron is a Unix system service that allows scheduled execution of scripts, programs, applications – in short anything that can be started from the command line. This includes OSX applications and AppleScripts. The Lirko.Online server used to run on OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and for a while it was good, but over time I experienced more issues and performance hits. This coupled along with the buggy OS X…

Leopard Assist

Leopard Assist

When Leopard (OS X 10.5) was released back in 2007 it requited at least a G4 867mhz processor which at that time left a lot of people out of the experience. However, we now know that although it will not install directly it can be ran on any Mac with G4 processor and AGP graphics. This is where LeopardAssist….er….assists! :p Perhaps LeopardAssist looks a little basic on the surface. A few clicks of the mouse is all LeopardAssist needs to…

The Unarchiver

The Unarchiver

The Unarchiver is a much more capable replacement for “Archive Utility.app”, the built-in archive extraction program on Mac OS X. The Unarchiver is designed to handle many more formats than Archive Utility, and to better fit in with the design of the Finder. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems. It is very simple to use and install – simply copy it into your Applications folder, or whereever else you…

Transmission

Transmission

Transmission is the recommended bit torrent client for Mac that I use on a regular basis. It has a clean unobtrusive interface and plenty of features, including a nice web-interface for remote access. Though downloading torrents always carries some risk, it is often the only way to find some of the older software for aging PowerPC Macs.
